I personally really like this new piece, and I really hope the judging committee feels the same way. I set it in Ab Major, probably my all-time favorite key, which I've used in a number of my works, such as Trombonage No. 2 and McBones Fanfare. I sort of had Richard Strauss' Festmusik der Stadt Wein (Which is an absolutely incredible piece of music, if you haven't heard it), although as I listen through it, there aren't a whole lot of similarities between the two. It is technically difficult, but nothing that a decent college ensemble couldn't handle, and certainly not out of the reach of the Dallas Wind Symphony. Even if I don't win this competition, I'm still proud of this piece, and I hope to share it with everyone!
I have added the piece to the "Catalog" under "Brass Ensembles". I'm not sure if I'll get a recording, but I may post the MIDI file on here soon for folks to listen to.
I apologize for being so out of touch, as I can see I've had a good number of page views lately. My second son was born 2 days ago, so I've been busy. Now I'm confident that I'll have some extra time to compose and update the website!
