Have I ever told you about what inspired me to become an orchestral musician? I'm sure some of you know already, but just to clear any questions or concerns...what got me going was the music of Star Wars. I remember when I was in 9th grade (and I remember this day quite well, unlike the rest of high school, which is a massive blur), I was sitting in my room listening to the Return of the Jedi soundtrack, and I decided that I wanted to be just like those guys playing that awesome music. So that lit the spark. I don't know if I would've paid that close attention to other orchestral music or not. Perhaps maybe a little later in life. But there's something about the music of Star Wars that always speaks to me, and it did back then for the first time. Despite all the complaints about cliches and all that crap that I heard from countless music students when I studied in college, as well as my vastly expanding knowledge of orchestral music and its structure, I still consider the music of Star Wars some of the greatest in...well, the galaxy.
So, as you can see, playing this music in an orchestra is very near and dear to my heart. Just like those who went into the medical field because of Dr. McCoy, or those who went into engineering because of Mr. Scott or Mr. Laforge, or those who went into robotics because of R2 or 3PO...I went into music because of Mr. Williams.
Take care and value music.
