There have been some changed made to the SeanBrownMusic website, mainly in the catalog section. As you can see, "Catalog & Recordings" has become "Works Catalog", and by hovering your mouse cursor over that link, pop-up tabs will appear. These tabs are all new pages, designed to help sort by ensemble category each of my pieces. I invite you all to have a look at the new layout, which is fairly simple. It is much easier now to find music for a specific ensemble. The pages are currently under revision, so if you run into a blank, that will soon be filled.
A new piece has been added to the "Works Catalog" page. It's the Monteverdi piece for 2 brass quintets I mentioned in my last blog entry. You can find it under the "Brass Choir" tab

A new arrangement has been completed, and will soon be added to the "Catalog & Recordings" page. It is a choral work by Claudio Monteverdi called "Nisi Dominus a 10". The original work is arranged well for 10 voices, appearing to be score for two 5-part choirs placed on separate sides of the stage. Thus, I have arranged it for 2 brass quintets, placed antiphonally on the stage. This arrangement turned out really quite well, and the music sounds very good. I play in a brass quintet here at UWM (quite a good one, actually), and I'm hoping maybe we can play this piece with another brass quintet, consisting of some other UWM folks. I'm have it posted to my Catalog soon.
Incidentally, I'm going to be making a few changes to this website, including so re-organizing of the Catalog layout. I want to make it a little easier to navigate and find pieces for specific ensembles. I hope to As of this morning at about 10am, my first semester as a graduate student at UWM is officially over!...and I'm very thankful that I have a break now. I don't think I've done this much horn playing in a 4-month period in my life, and my chops sure feel like they're exhausted. Throughout the normal week I was playing 2-4 hours of rehearsal a day, with another 3 hours of practicing. It's been a while since I've consistently done that much daily horn playing. I'm definitely exhausted after all that, but I'm not going to take a big break from the horn. I'll sit out Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but otherwise I'll still be practicing, getting ready for upcoming performances.
My Serenade for WInds, Op. 16 was premiered on Sunday with great success. It was performed by members of the UWM Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. John Climer. The ensemble played well, and a recording will be made available soon. I can be heard playing 1st horn on that recording. Also on the program was Francaix's "9 Characteristic Pieces" and Schuller's "Symphony for Brass & Percussion", both of which I also played 1st horn on. It was really quite an enjoyable performance. My piece was pretty well liked, especially by Dr. Climer, who's going to help me get the word spread about it.
Lots of Christmas music is in the works. My Christmas Brass Quintet book is coming along, and I've begun work on a Christmas book for the solo horn player, which I'll end up using while I stand next to the kettle for the Salvation Army. A Christmas duet book may also be made, as well as a quartet book for horns. I understand that it's a little late in the season to get started on these works, but at least they'll be ready for next Christmas. I've received yet another commission. This time, it comes from an undergraduate trombone quartet here at UWM called the Trombros. They're performing a recital during the spring semester, and after working on and performing Trombonage No. 1 with the rest of the UWM trombone studio, have asked me to write a piece to include on their recital. They're also willing to spend time to get a good recording of it to post here on this site. Thanks, guys!
Even more gracious of them is they'd like to help me get a good recording of my McBones Fanfare. And it doesn't end there. This Sunday the UWM Wind Ensemble is giving a chamber winds concert, with several really great works on the program. Included in that is my Serenade for Winds No. 1. I've very excited about this premiere, and I get to play 1st horn for it. After the performance, the we're going to bring a recording tech in and get a really good recording going of this piece. The piece is quite hard, so the extra recording opportunities will be helpful. With this recording, the wind ensemble director, John Climer, wants to send it to his colleagues. How great is that!? I may get some more performances out of this piece! Oh, and those Christmas arrangements for brass quintet. Well, I got 8 of them done and printed last night, and took them for a test drive with the UWM Graduate Brass Quintet. They went well, and will soon be posted along with other Christmas tunes. Along with many composition projects upcoming, I've got lots of performing to do. The chamber winds concert, as I mentioned, is this Sunday. I'm participating in the Band Concerto Compeition at UWM with a duo piece for horn and euphonium. I'm also performing the Basler Allelujia with a choir here in Milwaukee. Despite all the work one like me has, take care and value music. |
