But why, on one of the biggest musical performing stages ever, where more people are watching them for anything else, are there so many bad or un-interesting performances? It's because they keep throwing in all of these pop artists who are great recording artists, but lousy performers. And I think these performers think, "well, it doesn't matter if I perform well because I make a ton of money and people still like my albums, anyway."
I really believe that's what they do. I could be completely wrong, and that's fine with me. But what did we do to deserve a busy performance? This happens too often! I'm tired of pop stars who can perform...
What they should do is bring in real performers...musicians that are dedicated to the art of performance, have worked very hard for it, are very well-trained for it, and can do it memorably well without fail. The Super Bowl Halftime Show needs Classical musicians. Bring in John Williams with the Boston Pops and do a full program of his music. Bring in Gustavo Dudamel with the LA Phil! What about the Chicago Symphony & Chorale for a performance of Baba Yetu or the end of Beethoven's 9th Symphony? Why not do that!?
I'll tell you why. The "common folk" (I like to call them muggles) aren't in touch with good art. The idea of good art is the last thing on people's minds.
And so the idea of having an orchestra & Classical music on a halftime show I bet makes the NFL think that people won't like it. But guess what? A lot of people already don't like it. And guess what? It's time for something new.
I bet more people would like it than the NFL thinks. I think kids would really be inspired. That's what we really need. We need to develop an appreciation for the arts (and more specifically Classical music) in our children. The biggest stage in the world would be a perfect avenue to do that.
And using the best-trained musicians in our society, you can't go wrong; you'd never have a bad performance. It's just a matter of good programming, and there's hundreds (even thousands) of great pieces of music out there that can inspire and entertain people. That's what this society needs...inspiration, art, happiness...maybe it will help people be nicer to others.
I don't know. Just my two cents. I'm just tired of pop stars because most of them just aren't very good. And I'm tired of the under-appreciation of Classical music.
Sorry, rant over.
Take care and value music.
