No, this is about music, believe it or not. A little pretext:
So, I grew up listening to 80's rock. My parents always had it on in the car or at the house. I never really knew the names of any of the bands or singers I heard, nor any of the titles, because I just didn't really pay attention. I liked the soundtracks of video game I played or movies I liked, but was never really drawn to anything in particular. I wasn't really into listening to music until I decided I wanted to be an orchestra musician, and thus, my love for music involving orchestras blossomed.
However, for a long time I had this problem of convincing myself that I only liked Classical music (or more appropriately called "Western Music"). You know, orchestral music, band music, chamber music, soundtracks...that's all I liked. That's all I really listened to. And I know a lot of music, but there is still a lot to learn.
But as I grew older and got to know lots of other musicians, I found that the fact I didn't really know much about pop or rock music (or even jazz) was kind of embarrassing. I started to open myself up to these genres, which included watching singing competitions, playing Rock Band, and even getting a Spotify list going, but it was sort of a short spurt that lasted for a couple years. Since then, even though I know there's lots of great pop and rock music out there I like, I still don't really listen to it normally. And as I work with more and more middle and high school students who have pop music interests, I once again feel embarrassed for my lack of knowledge.
So I'm putting my foot down, and I'm going to start listening to the music that "normal" people listen to, just so I can be in the loop. I still will always prefer my original musical tastes first, but with more knowledge about rock, pop and jazz I feel like I can be a better musician. Plus, I just want to know more, y'know?
And then there's more Classical music I gotta get to know. I hardly know anything by Rachmaninoff, for instance. What's my problem? I've got to get on the ball! It's amazing what a great resource YouTube can be for Classical music. I have somewhat exercised this resource, but there's so much more still. I also want to find more recently-composed music for orchestra or chamber music that sounds good. I'm sure there's a lot of it out there.
Take care and value music...all music.
